“My Body –Your Body:” A Standard of Fairness in
Times of Disagreement
A Realm of Conversation for Adults with Young People
Far Beyond “room cleaning” and “homework”
Why do we applaud the current courage of Middle Eastern citizens who
risk death to gain fair treatment, yet when our own young people call
out to us with similar feelings of outrage, “That’s not fair!”
we turn a deaf ear. “Life isn’t fair,” we say dismissively, as we
discount and ignore their very real human concerns. In our smugness
that it is just kids’ normal mode of complaint, we leave them on their
own, time and again, to determine the behaviors required for living
responsibly with self and others in a difficult world that requires
skillful navigation.
In this workshop you will learn:
- That fair treatment in “power over” relationships
can occur only when the roles “parent,” “child,” “teacher,” and
“student” are taken out of the equation, allowing for the legitimacy of
the issue to be addressed between equal human persons.
- How implementation of the “My Body – Your Body”
(MBYB) model will alter the very foundation of your relationships,
moving conversations from trite rules about appropriate behavior to
extraordinary sharing about hopes, pains, dreams, and the struggle of
life.
- How to apply one universally accepted standard of
fairness to every situation – simple enough for 2 1/2 year olds to
understand, and fair enough for struggling teens to accept as valid and
follow without resentment.
- That there are only 4 clear intervention options you
will ever need to deal effectively with any behavior of a young person
– home or school.
- How to give young people a life skill for discerning
authority that deserves their respect from authority that warrants
their disobedience.
